As a Spanish teacher with over 20 years of experience, I understand the value of having reliable reference tools handy! These tools can help enable you to help your kids learn and use their Spanish skills with you. Here are my go-to resources that I can’t live without!
Most-Used Online Dictionary: Wordreference.com
This is my lifeline when I’m struggling to remember a word! The mobile app makes it super convenient for quick look-ups. Remember context is key! If you look up the translation of cool in Spanish you might get “fresco”, but if you say something is fresco when you mean the equivalent of awesome you’ll sound anything but cool ;). (Slang varies by region!!)

Most-Used Phrase Dictionary: Linguee.com
Sometimes you need to know how to say more than just a word and so a regular dictionary won’t quite cut it. I like Linguee because it gives you translations in a context, but it doesn’t always have the exact phrase you need, so there are other online translator tools available.
Most-used Online Translator : ChatGPT
As much as I hate to admit this, it’s true. ChatGPT is doing what we’ve feared Google Translate would do for some years. It’s actually able to take context into account and does not just translate word for word the way Google Translate used to when it started out. So, the translations are usually pretty accurate, but always be aware that there may be errors. ChatGPT by using huge amounts of language has been trained more similarly to the way humans learn language and therefore the Large Language Model is more able to simulate human translation.
Why do I hate to admit this? Because it feels like a sci-fi movie where the machines take over the jobs of humans and I feel awful for the translators out there that will lose their jobs or become editors rather than translators because of the new role that ChatGPT is taking on. However, it’s important to be honest and transparent. I don’t totally agree with the ethics of how ChatGPT obtained the enormous quantity of data it used, but ultimately they’ve created an incredibly powerful tool and that’s the reality!

Spanish Dict Conjugation Drills Offers immediate feedback and translations
Conjuguemos Despite the dated feel of the interface the efficiency of this practice tool can’t be beat.
While I don’t use these learning tools myself, I recommend them to my students all the time! So, if you want to dive into verb conjugation I highly recommend spending time with whichever tool helps you most!
In the end, when you’re learning and teaching Spanish, having the right tools can make all the difference to your Spanish language journey. I hope these resources will help you navigate the complexities of the language and communicate with confidence!
